  17. <p>Billionaire John Kluge gives $60 million to his alma mater,
  18. Columbia
  19. </p>
  20. <p>     A going-away present from John W. Kluge, chairman of the
  21. Metromedia Co., can be so generous as to make a person want to
  22. stay on after all. Last week, at a tribute to Columbia
  23. University's departing president, Michael I. Sovern, Kluge
  24. announced that he was giving the university a $60 million gift
  25. to endow minority scholarships. Kluge's donation is the largest
  26. ever made to Columbia, and according to the Chronicle of Higher
  27. Education, it's the sixth largest private gift given to an
  28. American university or college. Kluge also gave Columbia $25
  29. million in 1987 and the same amount in 1990. Gushed Sovern:
  30. "John will go down in history as one of the most generous
  31. benefactors of higher education there has ever been."
